Client Comments

Best Lawyers now features a program of client comments on listed lawyers to help other potential clients understand the particular skills of those lawyers.

We believe that peer-review – the methodology that we developed more than 25 years ago – continues to provide the most accurate basis for creating a list of outstanding legal talent. Two other well-known lawyer publications base their ratings in whole or in part on comments from clients arranged either by the lawyers who seek to be listed or by their marketing officers.

Most lawyers worthy of being considered for a publication such as ours can claim at least a few clients who are satisfied with their professional skills. As a result, we do not believe that client comments can by themselves be used to generate a list.

We do believe, however, that such comments can help other potential clients understand the particular strengths of lawyers who have already been acknowledged by their peers to be among the outstanding practitioners in their jurisdictions and in their fields of expertise. This is especially true if the comments are detailed and if they are attributed to specific clients. (Other publications provide short, generic comments that are attributed only to "clients" in general or to "the marketplace").

We have therefore invited all lawyers listed in Best Lawyers to put us in contact with clients who can provide comments about them. We have asked these clients to provide detailed comments and, if possible, to provide these comments for attribution. We are grateful for the level of response and pleased that most of the responding clients have agreed to let us identify them by name, title, and affiliation.

We believe that by continuing to base our lists on evaluations by other lawyers – selected by us and not by the lawyers being evaluated – but also by publishing comments that are often detailed and mostly attributed, we can provide important additional information to the many potential clients who refer to our lists when seeking lawyers of exceptional talent.

Seven states – Arkansas, Florida, Indiana, Nevada, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Wyoming – currently prohibit testimonials and endorsements. Although other publications include testimonials and endorsements for lawyers from these states, we will comply with the prohibition. (At least one of these states is now reconsidering the prohibition.) Additional states have restrictions on testimonials and endorsements. These states prohibiting testimonials that refer to pending matters, that come from celebrities or "public figures," or that "constitute a guarantee, warranty, or prediction regarding the outcome" of a legal matter or suggest that prior results will guarantee a similar outcome. We monitor comments in all states to make sure that they honor these restrictions.

If you are a lawyer listed in Best Lawyers and would like to arrange client comments or additional client comments, please contact Erin Brooks at 803-644-1667 or at ebrooks@bestlawyers.com.
